From bread markets to bread delivery: how we’ve adapted in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis

Founded in 2016, Breadwinners is a grassroots charity and not-for-profit social enterprise that employs refugees to sell the highest quality organic bread on farmer’s markets across London.

However, the COVID-19 crisis and subsequent lockdown has left charities and social enterprises with little option but to quickly adapt to the situation. We want to ensure that our main goal is to keep our Breadwinners community together and make sure our beneficiaries are supported.

Before social distancing was implemented, we made the tough decision to close down our market stalls and move to an online delivery service. This decision brought with it its own challenges and opportunities. We have partnered with Sumeria Bakehouse and together we’ve put together a selection of artisan bread and baked goods which can be delivered straight to your door.

Martin, our Director, is really pleased with how well our team have adjusted during this difficult time: “It's been impressive to see the support from our customers and volunteers, and to have been able to deliver our bread to over 700 houses, but what we are most proud of is to see how fast our crew is adapting and learning new skills. We hope to go back to our markets soon, and to be able to have both Markets and Online Deliveries going, offering more opportunities for refugees to work and progress. You can get your bread subscription and support us here.

Here at Breadwinners, we’re really passionate about bread and what it represents in our lives. Although it comes in many different forms but it’s something that is shared across the world and brings communities together. So during this time where we’re having to spend time away from the people we care about, we can use bread to show we care and support refugees at the same time.

As our service moved online, so too did our Risers and Breadwinners training and mentoring programmes. Instead of managing market stalls, our Breadwinners are instead learning new skills by managing our new bread delivery system and training to become sales representatives on our new Proofers Online Programme.

For example, Hassan, who has done both our Risers and Breadwinners programme is managing our online store and working hard to get your bread to you.

Of course, like many other organisations, we’ve also had to adapt to changes in how we interact with each other and stay connected within our community. But we’re really proud of how we’ve adapted to the situation. Every Sunday, we’ve been holding virtual events and learning sessions.

We hope to be able to return to the markets soon but at a time where it is safe, and fun, to do so. Until then, we will continue to fulfil your daily bread needs and get your Breadwinners’ deliveries to you on time!
