“I decided to take part in the walk for refugee day after mentoring on the most recent risers programme with Breadwinners. Won over by the bread and some conversations she has had at the stall, my housemate Jess decided to join me” Claire, Risers Volunteer Mentor.

-Breadwinners decided to celebrate World Refugee Day 2021 with a community walk, marked by Refugee Week “Great Walk Together” on 20th of June 2021-

After a rainy cycle, we arrived at Stratford and we were pleased to see a mix of new and familiar faces. Despite the rain, we were welcomed warmly and after quick intros and an energising speech from Martin (Breadwinners Director), we were on our way! Both Jess and I enjoyed the conversation starters. It was a great way to get to know other people and we were challenged to think about ourselves at times, for example through the question “what is your culture?”. We all agreed on our appreciation for London’s green spaces and wildlife – you’re never too far from a pigeon…

We finished at Clarnico Club, an independent coffee shop and event space based in the heart of East Wick Breadwinners bread for their sandwiches! The perfect place for a Breadwinners toastie and a spicy cup of chai!

The highlight for us was seeing Asiyo after her first time riding a bike! Good work! It was a really great morning made even better after a quick pitstop at Victoria Market on our way home for a Fig and Fennel loaf and a listen to the Market Stall Manager Espoir’s new song.

Thanks for a great day!
