“Breadwinners changed my life” - Heran’s story
We recently chatted with Heran to hear all about her progression from our Risers to our Breadwinners Programme, and how is she liking working as a Market Stall Manager and running her very own stall!
Hi Heran, can you introduce yourself to our Breadwinners community?
I’m 17 years old and from Eritrea. I will be studying in September ESOL Entry Level 3.
How did you find out about Breadwinners?
Through my foster family. She was telling me about Breadwinners, so we wrote them an email.
What is your favourite part of being a Market Stall Manager?
The community - both the market community and the Breadwinners community. And I learned a lot of things.
What have you learned on the programme so far?
The trainings that we do are very helpful. We learn life skills, which is really good. I also improved my English and I met a lot of people.
Which programme do you prefer? The Risers or Breadwinners?
I prefer the Breadwinners Programme because of the life skills I learned.
What are your favourite products on the market?
The focaccia and croissant!

Do you enjoy having a mentor?
Yes, she's really good. She helped me with a lot of things. We meet once a week, and she helps me with many things, like filling in forms, my CV, even studying, like homework. We have coffee together and sometimes just chat.
What are your plans after Breadwinners?
I would like to study and work part time. I'd like to stay with Breadwinners and do the Proofers Programme.
Do you have any tips or advice for young people who are also looking to gain work experience?
Yes, I recommend them to join Breadwinners, and to learn how to get job experience. They should start with the Risers Programme because they teach you a lot of things.
Any last words to our community?
Breadwinners is really, really good. It changed my life, really. I learned a lot, so now I know how to work.
