Coming together as a community in challenging times

At Breadwinners, we believe that community is at the heart of everything we do. That’s why we regularly host events and activities where our programme participants and mentors can connect, unwind, and bond outside the formalities of training sessions and the bustle of the markets. These gatherings are always special, but last week’s event felt particularly significant.

In the face of rising violence and fear across the UK, we made the difficult decision to close our markets (more on that below) and move our regular in-person training sessions online. Amidst this uncertainty, our community came together in a way that reminded us of the power and resilience we share.

Gathering over a delicious meal at a Yemeni restaurant in London, there was space for open conversations and for everyone to express their feelings and find comfort in the company of others. It was an evening filled with warmth, support, and laughter.

This event served as a powerful reminder of the strength of community and of the welcoming city we live in. A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to making it a night to remember.

I’m feeling better, dinner with everyone was fun and definitely restored morale. I actually miss the market, I’m happy to get back!

Statement on market closures -

9 August 2024

Last week, made the difficult decision to temporarily close all our markets across London and Brighton in response to the far-right riots spreading across the UK. The safety of our community is our top priority, and while this decision was necessary, it was not made lightly.

At Breadwinners, we are deeply aware that the vast majority of people in this country stand in solidarity with our community. We are incredibly grateful for the unwavering support of our customers, volunteers, and partners, and for the strong, inclusive community we’ve built together—both at our markets and beyond.

We look forward to reopening our markets this coming weekend and can’t wait to welcome our customers back to the stalls.
