On the 15th-17th October, we’re taking part in the Choose Communities campaign to encourage Londonders to ‘buy social’ to spend their money where it makes a difference - with social enterprises like ours!

 
 

What’s it all about?

 

Breadwinners has joined a national campaign to raise awareness about and get people spending their money with social enterprises. The Choose Communities: Buy Social Campaign is all about shining a spotlight on the impact social enterprises are having on communities both in the UK and around the world.

The campaign is all about the power of the individual consumer. Whenever you shop, you have the chance to improve your community by shopping with a business that invests its profits back into your community.

In this time when communities need to come together more than ever, buying social means that your money, instead of going to a huge supermarket, goes directly towards helping the people who need it within the London community. Even just the act of buying a loaf of bread, with Breadwinners, can help improve the life of a young refugee in the UK.

 
 

Why is it important?

 

Commenting on the Choose Communities campaign, Peter Holbrook, Chief Executive at Social Enterprise UK, said:

“The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on communities but at the same time there has been a real resurgence in community spirit – people have been coming together to support each other, mutual aid groups have been set up and we have come together to celebrate the vital work carried out by key workers across the country. 

It’s now vital that social enterprises are placed at the heart of our recovery from the pandemic so we can build back better in a way that is more equal and sustainable. We can all play our part in growing the social enterprise movement and the best way to do this is to buy social because when you do, you are choosing communities.”

Our director at Breadwinners Martin also had a few words to say about why the campaign was so important:

“The Choose Communities campaign is about bringing to light the power that anyone has with their purchasing choices to support so many organisations bringing positive change to our society.

By choosing to buy our amazing baked goods, you are supporting young refugees to access their first jobs in the UK and create a positive future for themselves and their communities.”
