Our Director Martin talks about why it's important to support refugees
When did you get involved with Breadwinners? I got involved in October 2017, fresh out of the On Purpose Associate programme, trying to work out my purpose and my career. Breadwinners mission captivated me, working with young refugees through a model that can tackle big inequalities in a direct and effective way, and having the best bread at the same time!
How did you hear about it and why did you want to join? My brother found the job opportunity and though it was a good match for me. I was not sure about it, as I have never thought of myself as a Social Entrepreneur, and had no idea of what would it take, but the many experiences I had in the past prepared me well! Along my journey, I re-started several times, in different countries, and have done a myriad of jobs. At Breadwinners, I get to do absolutely everything, and work with the most fun and inspiring people.
Why do you think it’s important to support refugees and young people seeking asylum?
Refugees and people seeking asylum have inspired me big time, to the point of willing to leave a comfortable career in the profit sector, and dedicate myself fully in trying to address the big inequalities that they face when trying to start fresh, looking for their first jobs in a new country, in a new culture and a new language. They have amazing skills, they are very resilient, and have overcome massive challenges, they can be great employees or entrepreneurs, but there is a massive disparity in the opportunities they are able to get.
What has been your favourite thing about working with Breadwinners?
Seeing young people develop so fast is very motivating and makes me very happy. At Breadwinners, we are able to offer the first UK work experience, and we are able to be there on the very first steps, selling bread at our stalls. The capacity to challenge themselves and go for it is what motivates me the most. My favourite part of our programmes are the graduation celebrations, seeing proud faces, and sharing the dance floor!
What can refugees bring to society? Skills, and immense positive energy, hard work, kindness, the willingness to take challenges and opportunities, their big hearts and their drive to do it all to help. It is something not easy to find. My experience with over hundreds of people who have been forced to migrate has always taught me something about life!
