In our latest Refugee Week interview series, we spoke to one of our young Breadwinners, Nasir, about his experience of working with Breadwinners and what he thinks refugees can bring to society.

How did you hear about Breadwinners and when did you get involved?

I first heard about Breadwinners in October last year. My friend Marian from DOST told me about this great programme while I was at a youth club and that it sounded like something that would be really beneficial to me. I joined a month later.

What is your favourite thing about Breadwinners?

I love that Breadwinners encourages me to be active. It has helped me develop into a hard worker and has given me the opportunity to have lots of responsibility. I also love working at the markets because I can meet lots of new people and learn about the different cultures in the UK.

Why is it important to support refugees?

It’s really important to support refugees because coming to a new country with new rules and a totally different environment can be really difficult. It’s important to help them develop skills that will help them in their future because on their own it can be difficult to know where to start!

What do you think refugees can bring to society?

Refugees can bring so many different things to society including a variety of cultures, backgrounds and ethnicities that can help to make society a more diverse place. We all have different mentalities, ideas and experiences and I think it’s important to join together to share skills. Refugees can bring something beautiful to society.

When you get your refugee status what job would you like to do? And why is it important for you to be able to work?

When I get refugee status, I want to work for the social services and help people who need help just like I once did.

What message would you send for key workers out there that are working and what do you think about the sign you are holding?

I’m thankful for what they’re doing for society. I would like to say don't stop what you do for us every day and we stand by you. Together we can beat whatever problem comes our way!
