A whole loaf more than just bread
To mark Social Enterprise Day, we want to celebrate the impact of our work. As a proud social enterprise, our profits allow us to support refugees and young people seeking asylum to thrive.
Through selling bread, we provide refugees with their first job in the UK. Working as Market Stall Managers, our Breadwinners gain valuable work experience, earn the London living wage, broaden their networks and integrate into their community.
Our market stalls also allow us to provide opportunities to young people seeking asylum who are not allowed to work. Our Risers Programme provides work experience, training and mentoring to young people, meaning they can continue to develop skills and improve their wellbeing while they wait for their asylum claim to be processed.
As a social enterprise, we ensure that there is a direct correlation between our financial growth, through bread sales and funding, and the number of young people we support. In the past year, we have launched new markets, developed new programmes and increased the capacity of our core team, which has allowed us to support more young people.
Another key recent development for us as a social enterprise was the launch of our online sales platform and setting up business-to-business sales via the Proofers Programme. The programme trains Breadwinner graduates to become online Sales Representatives, managing our e-commerce and wholesale services. This not only increases the sustainability of our work by diversifying our sources of income, but also allows us to reinvest profits into providing more employment opportunities for programme participants.
To date, more than 150 refugees and young people seeking asylum have participated in our programmes. We’re excited about what the future holds for us as a social enterprise as we grow and expand, and for our young people that are at the core of what we do.
To support our mission, visit us at our markets, buy from us online or become a volunteer mentor.
