One year with Breadwinners: Peiman’s story

Meet Peiman - three times Breadwinners champion having completed all three of our programmes! We chatted to him to find out what his year at Breadwinners was like.

The year I spent with Breadwinners made the biggest effect on my life. It helped me a lot to improve my language, to meet new friends and to give me the confidence I need to be in my new community.
— Peiman

“I joined Breadwinners in October 2020 as a Riser and gained work experience. Then I progressed on to become a Market Stall Manager as part of the Breadwinners Programme. That gave me the best experience in developing my communication skills, helping me develop my confidence, as well as teaching me how to speak to customers.”

Progression

After six months working at the markets, Peiman progressed onto our Proofers Programme and became one of our Online Sales Representatives. The programme seeks to further develop the customer service and IT skills of young refugees through managing our e-commerce and wholesale service. Our Proofers talk to customers and businesses on the phone to gather feedback, respond to queries and expand our cafe partnerships.

Developing skills

It’s a challenging programme which requires our Proofers to develop many new skills.

“At the beginning, I had some difficulties understanding different accents on the phone but my speaking skills have improved and now I feel confident talking to customers on the phone.”

Writing emails to customers has developed my IT skills. This has helped me when writing cover letters and applying to jobs.”
— Peiman

The programme is focussed on developing the Proofer’s transferable skills, so that they are better prepared to gain further employment after the programme.

“Throughout the programme, I developed very useful IT skills, including how to use a database and programmes such as Excel and Microsoft. Writing emails to customers has developed my IT skills. This has helped me when writing cover letters and applying to jobs. Without Breadwinners, I would not have known how to find a job and how to improve my language.”

“I have developed professional communication skills and how to solve problems independently and in a team. I can also now manage my time very well and I multitask.”

Wellbeing and confidence

Improving young refugee’s confidence and wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do.

“The year I spent with Breadwinners made the biggest effect on my life. It helped me a lot to improve my language, to meet new friends and to give me the confidence I need to be in my new community. The support I received has built my confidence to do anything. Now I'm even more motivated to achieve my goal of becoming an engineer.”
