"First steps are really hard but also really important. They change us." - Florjan's story

My Journey with Breadwinners

Hello everyone, my name is Florjan. I am 22 years old and am from Albania. I arrived in this country a year ago to improve my life and I recently completed the Risers Programme with Breadwinners.

It’s an amazing charity. The programme was so helpful and the experience will be unforgettable. The staff are wonderful. Martin and Georgia never get tired and are so positive in any situation. They helped us a lot and we had lots of fun together. The Risers Programme gave us real work experience at one of Breadwinners’ eight London food markets. I was at Maltby Street Market with Mo as the Stall Manager. This experience helped me a lot in many different areas of my life, including communication, team work, punctuality, using the payment machine and setting up the store.

We also had training every week where we learnt about building a CV, sales tips, interview skills, and gained a certificate in Food Safety and Hygiene. I am so grateful for this experience.

Last but not least, I want to thank my mentor Meera. She was there for me anytime I needed her help and patiently explained many things to me. We went to the British Museum together and had the chance to travel back in history and look at many different cultures. We also frequently had video calls and we would speak about the training and how I enjoyed the market on weekends. I haven’t known her for a long time but it feels as if I have! Big thanks to Meera and her effort on this journey with me.

To end, I want to share some wise words: First steps are really hard but also really important. They change us and make us who we are.

Thank you so much to everyone at Breadwinners.
