Flour power: Ruth’s story

Ruth has been a huge part of Breadwinners for years. A graduate of all three of our programmes, we recently caught up with her to see where her Breadwinners journey has taken her.

Hey Ruth, so when did you get involved with Breadwinners?

I joined Breadwinners in October 2019 on their work experience programme. Then I became a Market Stall Manager, working with them until May 2021.

How did getting your first job help you to heal?

I have developed a confidence that I never thought I’d have. Breadwinners has helped me see myself in a different light. I used to be hard on myself, but the Breadwinners team always said, “You can do this”. When I was struggling, the support I had was amazing. I’m forever grateful. I will never forget Breadwinners, ever. Breadwinners understands people, understands individuals. They take their time to understand each person and stand up for everyone. They treat us like human beings. This is what makes Breadwinners stand out.

When I think of Breadwinners, I think of family. The environment and the people around you are all so supportive. You become a part of a family. Even when you leave [the programmes], you’re still part of it. You have a place. Not everyone has that, but you do at Breadwinners.

It’s hard to put into words what Breadwinners means to me. I don’t think I can say thank you enough for everything they’ve done for me.

What did you learn from working at Breadwinners?

I learnt how to deal with customers, understand their needs and develop patience. In fact, it helped me to know how to deal with people in general.

Through working, I felt more integrated into my community. I’d been in the UK for a long time but Breadwinners helped me see more opportunities and to understand what I’m entitled to.

I’m really proud that I’ve come so far. It wasn’t easy but I’m proud.

How did working help you to reach your next step?

I don’t think I could ever have got another job if it hadn’t been for the training and support from Breadwinners. Before, I would have been scared [to do a job interview] but now I have so much more self confidence. The interview training we did really helped me to get my next job. In the real interview, I felt relaxed and spoke about my market experience and I got the job instantly! Breadwinners helped me to reach my next step. Before I thought I couldn’t do it, but now I can and I did! I’m really proud that I’ve come so far. It wasn’t easy but I'm proud.

What are you up to now?

Now I’m working front of house at a restaurant and doing a training programme at Luminary Bakery. I am also part of a choir which I love.

What’s your favourite bread?

My favourite bread is the baguette. I mash avocado with condensed milk and have it as a dip for the bread. You should try it, it’s so good!

Thank you for taking the time to speak to us Ruth. We’re so proud of how far you come. Keep doing you!!
