Weddingcholita: A Community Love Story Rooted in working with Young People

Leila from Compass Collective charity and Tincho (nickname for Martin, Breadwinners Director!) got married earlier this year, and had special celebration nicknamed Weddingcholita, specially for the young people community that got them to meet them in the first place! — this was a testament to the power of community and their shared dedication to supporting young people. Surrounded by volunteers, friends, family, and the youth they’ve worked with.

The moment Leila and Martin got married!!

Here Leah’s and Frank’s vows! Dear friends of the couple set the stage for this unforgettable moment.

Leah: “We are gathered here today to celebrate the loving union of Compass and Breadwinner’s. Leila, co-director of Compass, and Tincho, Director of Breadwinners, are now fully baked as a couple and ‘bready’ to take the next step.”

Frank: “This is not your classic love story. Oh no, this is a Youth Filled love story.”

Leila, lover of music and speaker of Arabic, met Tincho, lover of bread, football, and capoeira, at a session for young refugees. If it wasn’t for refugees like the young people here today, they would never have met!

Leah: “Leila, lover of music and speaker of Arabic, met Tincho, lover of bread, football, and capoeira, at a session for young refugees. If it wasn’t for refugees like the young people here today, they would never have met!”

Frank: How can people possibly say that refugees are not positively impacting UK society? Can you imagine a world without Leila and Tincho as a married couple?! This must be one of the best things that ever happened because of refugees!

Leah: Tincho, the radical baker of Breadwinners, was always going against the grain. He was cooking up a way to get to Leila. He asked her to join him for a drink right after the session!

Leila didn’t realize it was a date and wanted Ebrahim to come along. But Ebrahim, realizing the truth, left them to it.

We don’t know what happened on that date, but we can assume that Tincho said, as a true Breadwinner, “Things will definitely get real toasty if I get to see you again.”

Frank: Quick question to you all. How does bread court his sweetheart? With lots of flours.

Leah: You know, Frank, I think your jokes are the best thing since sliced bread!
Leila, did Tincho bring you lots of flowers?

Leila, in her non-traditional way, was the one to propose to Tincho in front of both sets of their parents! She said, “My loaf for you is rising!” and produced, not a ring, but a bracelet.

Frank: Now it’s time to take your marriage vows. Repeat after me.

The Vows

Frank: Do you, Tincho, take Leila as your wedded wife, even in times of no baking and no football, but rugby? Will you accept her early morning singing, lunches filled with her playing the guitar, and days dedicated to refugee work?

Tincho: I do.

Leah: Do you, Leila, take Tincho as your wedded husband, to have date nights filled with football formations and a bakery at home?

Leila: I do.

Frank: We now pronounce you husband and wife!

Leah: You may now kiss the bride!

Frank: Wait! Before you kiss, I need to tell you a story...

Cue laughter, love, and the joyous beginning of Leila and Tincho’s life together as husband and wife.
