Proofers: Opening Doors for Refugees in the Digital World

The Proofers Programme is a fantastic initiative designed to support refugees in developing important skills for jobs in e-commerce and customer service. It started as a response to the challenges many faced during the COVID-19 pandemic and offers participants the chance to gain real experience through an online bread delivery and wholesale service.

In this programme, participants learn essential skills like communication and IT, which are crucial for today's job market. They connect with customers by making calls, which helps them improve their communication skills. This hands-on experience is invaluable as they learn to manage online sales and databases.

Mobarak, one of the participants, shared that his experience in the programme has been positive. He enjoys talking to customers and collaborating with colleagues in the office. Mobarak also had the chance to visit the Amazon office and City Point to discuss what Breadwinners is doing for refugees and asylum seekers in the UK. He mentioned, “I’ve been to a lot of amazing places since joining the programme”.

The Proofers Programme also prepares participants for the next steps in their careers. They receive coaching on how to conduct interviews and create professional CVs, giving them the confidence they need to apply for new jobs. With the support of mentors and trainers, participants are well-equipped to take on new challenges in the workforce. Each participant is provided with a laptop and headset, ensuring they have the tools needed for success. These resources are designed to help participants not only learn but also apply their skills in real-world situations, preparing them for future job opportunities.

Hussam, the programme manager, shares “I’m really proud of how young people in the programme are learning new things, improving their skills and communication. I feel even happier when they get a job after completing the programme.”

It is important to note that participants must complete the Breadwinners Programme before joining the Proofers Programme. This ensures they have a solid foundation to build on before advancing to the next level.

Overall, the Proofers Programme not only helps refugees gain vital skills but also opens doors to new opportunities, empowering them to create a brighter future for themselves.
