Breadwinners Celebrates Ramadan with Thread Ahead Event
At the beginning of Ramadan, we celebrated this special month with our community, whether they were observing Ramadan or not, by attending an event organised by our friends at Thread Ahead. This helps our young people feel more like London is their home and supports them to integrate into the UK.
This allowed our community to engage with people of different backgrounds and learn more about Ramadan. Ramadan is a special month for Muslims, where they use special lighting, food and drink, social events with friends and family and gifts, along with Taraweh prayer, to celebrate the holy month.
Led by our events volunteer Sarah, we attended an event with Thread Ahead to collect clothes donated to London’s refugee community. Thread Ahead arranges clothes ‘shopping’ experiences using new, surplus clothing where refugees or people seeking asylum in London can choose wonderful clothes from a range of partners, such as Lucy & Yak. After, we had drinks and dates to celebrate Iftar.
The event was particularly special for our community as it gave everyone an opportunity to get together and enjoy socialising for the first time after the most recent COVID-19 lockdown.
The event was put together with help from our volunteers Ali and Sarah. Reflecting on the event, they told us they really enjoy volunteering with Breadwinners and that it’s a great way to learn new things. Next Ramadan, they hope to organise even more events and enjoy Ramadan parties with our community.
