Did you know that every year 18 million tons of food end up in landfill in the UK alone?!

At Breadwinners, we make sure no bread goes to waste at our end (through using food waste apps, donating our bread to homeless shelters or, if damaged, to be used as animal feed) and we want to make sure you do the same!

Here are our top tips for making the most of your Breadwinners loaf.

Store it right

Keep your bread in a cool, dark place, preferably wrapped in a tea towel or stored in a cotton bag. Don’t keep your bread in the fridge, as this will make it dry out faster. If you aren’t going to be using your bread in one of the ways below, then try and eat it within three days as this is when it’s at this best.

Bread can be revived the day after buying by sprinkling it lightly with water and placing it on a tray in the oven for ten minutes.

Freeze it

Bought too much bread? No problem! On the day of buying, pop your loaf in the freezer. When you’re ready to eat it, leave it to defrost overnight or for a few hours, and eat immediately.

You can also slice your bread before freezing, so you can just take out one loaf at a time. If you find the slices get stuck together and you can’t separate them, try freezing slices flat on a tray or in freezer bags first.

Toast(ie) it

Toasting is arguably one of the best ways to eat our sourdough bread. Try it topped with good quality jam or smashed avocado and chilli flakes.

Sourdough toasties are also a fab way to eat your loaf. Take a look at our Smoked Cheese, Onion Chutney and Red Onion toastie recipe here or why not try one of these recipes from Delicious Magazine.

Gone stale?

We’ve all had an abandoned half a loaf sitting in our cupboard, forgotten about only to discover a week later that it’s as hard as a rock. Stale bread can be used in one of the recipes below, or why not try making it into croutons or whizz them in a food processor to make breadcrumbs. These breadcrumbs make great stuffing, or use them to make a tasty, crunchy topping on pasta bake.

Use it in a recipe

There are hundreds of ways to use up leftover bread. On our blog we have great recipes for Italian bread parmigiana and for bread salad (Panzanella), which are some of our favourite ways to use up leftover bread. But there are plenty more! We also love using our bread to make bread and butter pudding and brushetta with tomato and basil.

I hope that inspires you to make the most out of your Breadwinners loaf, so we can work together to end food waste and protect our planet!
